A simple check you can do right now on your website

I would like to show you a simple task you can do right now to see if your website is ok for your web visitors.  It does not require any technical skills or knowledge.  I am not going to blind you with infographics, snappy images or glib clichés.  I won’t even throw statistics at you.

You have heard about the way Google is penalising slow loading websites.

How many times have you been told your website page loading speed is a problem or maybe you just don’t know if the website is slow.

Confused when all you read is jargon when you just want a simple answer?

It is so frustrating listening to online “experts” making everything complicated so that they appear brilliant.

You have a business, deal with clients and are not an idiot.  OK computers and the web may not be your thing but that does not mean you don’t know what you want or can’t understand that something is wrong.

First step – look at your website.  No, I mean really look at the website on a pc, a mobile phone and a tablet.  If you don’t have a smart phone or a tablet, check your kids or relations and see if you can get access to one because most of your potential clients are using mobile devices to look at your site.

Now a few simple questions.

Did the website look good on

  • The pc
  • The smart phone
  • The Tablet

Can you read the words without doing that funny thing with your fingers to enlarge the text?

Did the website load within 2-3 seconds on

  • The pc
  • The smart phone
  • The Tablet

Does your main message appear in a prominent position on the

  • The pc
  • The smart phone
  • The Tablet

Is your Call to Action, what you want the website visitor to do, easy to find on the page

  • The pc
  • The smart phone
  • The Tablet

Look at your competitors’ website and answer the same questions and see where you can change your site for a better effect on visitors.

It will take a bit of time to do the above but the payback is huge.  Imagine looking at your website on a smartphone and spotting that your phone number does not appear at the top.  A simple change would then have a great effect on your business success.

You don’t need any special, fancy high tech tool to do this visual check.  You would not get your business decorated and not check it, your website is no different.

You need to look at your website from the perspective of a customer and ask the big question – does my website tell them what they are looking for and does is encourage them to contact me or better still, buy from me.

I hope you take on board these few checks that you can do on your website, over the week-end.
